Levels of Editing

Some manuscripts need only a delicate hand to ensure its readability; others may require me to roll up my sleeves and help the intrepid writer be the best writer they can be.

Light Edit

  • Correction of mechanical inaccuracies
  • Correction of basic grammatical inaccuracies
  • Check chapter titles on Contents Page against chapters in book
  • Check alphabetization of reference list or bibliography and correct if needed
  • Check that footnotes, endnotes, and in-text citations correspond to their proper references or bibliography and correct if needed
  • Query or Comment on any excessive or convoluted wording
  • Query or Comment on terms that may need clarification
  • Query or Comment on any possible factual inconsistencies
  • Query or Comment on any items that may need copyright permissions
  • Query or Comment on any items that do not adhere to the given Style Guide

Moderate Edit

  • Correction of mechanical and grammatical inaccuracies
  • Check all correlating parts (i.e. chapter titles and Contents Page; footnotes, endnotes, and citations with references and/or bibliography) and correct if needed
  • Query or Comment on any faulty organization and/or gaps in logic
  • Query or Comment on any excessive or convoluted wording and give suggestions
  • Query or Comment on terms that may need clarification and give possible suggestions
  • Query or Comment on any superficial factual inconsistencies and suggest possible sources to use
  • Query or Comment on any items that may need copyright permissions
  • Query or Comment on any items that do not adhere to the given Style Guide

Heavy Edit

  • Correction of mechanical and grammatical inaccuracies
  • Check all correlating parts (i.e. chapter titles and Contents Page; footnotes, endnotes, and citations with references and/or bibliography) and correct if needed
  • Correct any faulty organization and/or gaps in logic
  • Correct any excessive or convoluted wording
  • Define terms that need clarification
  • Query or Comment on any superficial factual inconsistencies and suggest possible sources to use
  • Query or Comment on any items that may need copyright permissions
  • Query or Comment on any items that do not adhere to the given Style Guide
